Rain related incidents claim 27 lives in UP; Over thousand villages in Odisha remain flood affected

In Uttar Pradesh, heavy rain wreaked havoc in eastern districts leaving 27 people dead and 10 injured while water level was rising in major rivers. Train services on the Delhi-Howrah route, were affected badly after the signal system developed snag at Mughalsarai station due to heavy rain. Signal system has now been restored partially. Several trains are still running behind the schedule on this route. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that the state government has sanctioned financial relief of one lakh rupees each to the next kin of victims in rail related incidents in Jaunpur and Mirzapur districts. 18 persons were died in Jaunpur while 9 in Mirzapur district in the incidents of house collapse. The government has also made available 2 crore rupees each to the districts affected in current spell of heavy rain. According to Central Water Commission, due to heavy rainfall in the last couple of days, water level in major rivers is rising at a number of places. Ganga is rising at Allahabad, Mirzapur, Varanasi and Ghazipur, whereas Gomati is rising at Sultanpur and Jaunpur. Met department says, Varanasi, Mirzapur and Allahabad Division has recorded heavy rain fall in last 48 hours. The weathermen have predicted moderate to heavy rain at most places in eastern UP and light to moderate rain and thundershower at few places in western parts of the state. Flood companies of PAC and National Disaster Relief Force have been alerted. PAC teams have been rushed to Jaunpur and Mirzapur. Odisha continues to reel under one of the worst floods in recent history with hundreds of villages still marooned and thosands of affected people starving for food since six days. The floods in major rivers like Baitarani, Brahmani, Budhabalanga and Subarnarekha over more than 1,100 villages in 10 districts of the 30 districts in the state. The worst hit has been Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada and Keonjhar districts. Though water level of Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga, Baitarani have come down, Brahmani continues to rise menacingly. A large number of people have taken shelter over river embankments, house roofs and trees as flood water has entered or damaged their houses with road communication being cut off in flood water. According to reports received from the Odisha government, 17 people have so far lost their lives in the second phase of flood in Odisha that affected more than 22 lakh people. 1,114 villages are still marooned in flood water, while 3,128 villages and 11 cities have been badly affected in the second phase of flood. The state government has also expressed its inability in providing relief to many marooned areas due to high level of flood water. Six helicopters which have been engaged in relief operation are not able to cover the vast flood-affected areas in the state.A 4-member Central team is visiting Odisha today o assess loss due to the current flood. The flood in Mahanadi river system in the second week of this month had affected 3.4 million people in 19 districts, causing 39 human casualty and a loss of Rs 2,122 crore to the State.
