The Uttar Pradesh government has requisitioned the Centre for further deployment of National Disaster Response Force, NDRF at Moradabad and Gonda districts badly hit by flood. State Relief Commissioner K K Sinha has said that two columns each of NDRF would be deployed in these two districts along with boats for relief and rescue operations. AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that the flood situation has worsened in Moradabad where the water of overflowing Ramganga River has affected the traffic on the National Highway-24 linking Delhi and Lucknow. The Highway was closed for the last three days between Moradabad and Rampur. The situation in the eastern districts of the state is already serious as the turbulent Ganga, Sharda, Ghaghra, Rapti and Saryu rivers have crossed the danger mark at several places due to heavy rainfall and release of water from different dams and barrages on the rivers. Due to release of water from Tajewala dam in Haryana, the water-level of Yamuna river has risen in many places. Baharaich, Gorakhpur, Gonda, Barabanki, Moradabad, Meerut , Ghaziabad and Bijnore continued to be affected by the flood. Flood situation in Lakhimpur district continues to remain grim with the heavy discharge of waters into Sharda from Banbasa barrage. Seven SSB border outposts have been inundated by water from Sharda, affecting patrolling on Indo-Nepal border. As per reports available, at least ten people were killed in rain and flood related incidents in the state during last 24 hours. Four people died in Hardoi, three in Ballia, two in Etawah and one in Jaunpur in various rain-related incidents. In Uttarakhand, normal life has been disrupted due to rain and landslide for the last five days. Meanwhile, rain continues in different parts of the state on Friday. In Assam, the overall flood situation in Dhemaji district has started to improve with no more rain in the catchment areas. According to official sources, the water level in most of the rivers in the district, originating from Arunachal Pradesh, is receding. More than one lakh, fifty five thousand population in the district were affected in the current wave of floods. Meanwhile, surface communication to the district headquarters of Dhemaji has been restored after repair of the damaged portion of National highway 52 at Samarajan. The road communication between Silapathar and Dhemaji is still cut off. The district authorities have taken up restoration works at Sisi-Borgaon-Tokobari on war footing. According to officials, restoration of rail link to the district will take several months. The Centre is likely to send a high-level team to Assam soon to assess the flood situation in the state. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has conveyed this to a group of MPs from the state who raised the issue when they met him in New Delhi on Thursday.
