The Railways have launched an innovative initiative to prevent possible accidents at unmanned railway level crossings in the country using SMS facilities on mobile phones. The SMS campaign will make the people aware about the possible danger of mishaps at all the unmanned level crossings. The text messages in Hindi and English are educative in nature and appeal to bus drivers, tractors and other road users to take adequate precautions while negotiating them. According to Railway officials, at present, there are over 35 thousand level crossings in the railway network, out of which over 17 thousand are unmanned.
