Railway Ministry today said that the Harda Railway accident was caused due to erosion of soil from below the tracks after exceptionally heavy rainfall. Talking to media this evening, Member Engineering in the Railway Board, V K Gupta termed it as the freakiest of freak accidents by railway standards. He said, this kind of accident defeats all probability. He said, the area received around 220 millimeters of rainfall in 12 hours and the water-level rose over 36 meters. Mr Gupta said, Railway staff inspecting the tracks in the area had warned the driver of heavy rain and the trains were halted before the bridge. He said, if the trains would have been moving, worse could have happened. Mr Gupta and other state officials had visited the place on the accident day.<br/><br/>In Madhya Pradesh, the repair work is going on at the accident site near Harda railway station. Damaged bogies were being lifted and restoration on railway tracks were continuing. General manager of western central railway Mr. Ramesh Chandra said due to bad weather repairing work is getting affected. Rescue operation is over but search was still going on at the banks of the machak river, because some passengers are still missing. District collector has confirmed twenty seven deaths in the twin train accident.
