The Railways has partially rolled back some of its stiff proposals by exempting second class suburban travel upto 80 km from the 14.2 percent hike in fares.
It also reduced the severity of hike for monthly season ticket, MST holders.
A statement issued by the Railways in New Delhi last night said that MST holders will now have to make payment for 15 trips for travelling unlimited times during a month. However, the hike of 14.2 per cent in fares will apply to the MST.
The decision will give relief to lakhs of travellers mainly in metro cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Delhi. Fare hike in the unreserved segment will come into force from 28th of this month, instead of today.
However, the fare hike in reserved ticket segment will come into effect today as announced earlier.
The revision came hours after the MPs from the ruling NDA belonging to Maharashtra met Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda and demanded a rollback in the hike.
