The Railways is planning to create two freight corridors—one from Delhi to Mumbai and another from Delhi to Kolkata. This was disclosed by Minister of State for Railways KH Muniyappa in Chennai on Friday. He said parallel freight corridors are being planned as the freight has been an important source of earning for the Railways. Muniyappa said while western corridor from Delhi to Mumbai will cost Rs 26,000 crore, the eastern corridor from Delhi to Kolkata will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 24,000 crore. The Minister said feasibility study has commenced for the southern freight corridor on Mumbai-Bangalore-Chennai section. He also said separate passenger corridors — from Delhi to Mumbai and from Delhi to Kolkata — are also being created.
