Railways has introduced a new facility for transfer of vacant berths in trains to wait listed passengers. The facility was launched by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu at a function in New Delhi. <br/><br/>Under it, the Passenger Reservation System will automatically allot the vacant berths available at the originating stations after the final charting to the subsequent stations for clearing wait listed passengers. Such passengers will receive SMS on their mobile phones indicating the alloted coach and berth number.<br/><br/>Speaking on the occasion, Mr Suresh Prabhu said, the move will help passengers while earning more revenue for Railways.<br/> <br/>At present wait listed passengers get berths only if the confirmed seats are cancelled. Also, nearly three lakh berths go unutilised every year.<br/><br/>Mr Prabhu also launched a policy providing sub quota of 33 per cent to women within reserved categories for the allotment in catering units at various stations. Besides, a policy giving preference to local domicile holders for commercial licenses at stations have been introduced. <br/><br/>In other initiatives, the Railways has launched a 'liberalized station to station special freights rates policy' under which targeted items will be food grain, Cement, steel companies, fly ash and others. The policy will help get additional loading of 10 million tonnes annually. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu also launched a New Time Table for passenger trains which will be effective from 1st of October.
