Nine trains have been provided with 504 bio-toilets in the country so far. Giving this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Minister for Railways, Mukul Roy said that based on the experience gained and outcome of these trails, it is planned to induct bio-toilets progressively in the trains.

He said that no railway-wise introduction of bio-toilets is envisaged. He said the funds spent for this purpose in the 11th Five Year Plan were approximately six crore rupees.
