Railways develops Hybrid Vacuum Toilets

Development Cell of the Railway Board has come up with a Hybrid Vacuum Toilet design, which combines the advantages of both Vacuum toilets and those of Bio toilets. This newly developed toilet facility has been fitted in Dibrugarh Rajdhani on trail basis.

Typically, a conventional toilet or Biotoilet uses 10 – 15 liters of water per flush whereas the vacuum toilet consumes only 500 Milliliters of water for flushing. By transferring the discharge of the vacuum toilets into biodigester, the need to create separate ground handling installation and creating additional sewer load on the Municipal Corporation will be done away with this new design.

With this Indian Railways become first ever system of its kind to have been developed and built by any railway system in the world.
