Rail services to resume on Tsunami-hit Galle Matara sector

Rail services are due to begin this Wednesday on the recently upgraded Galle Matara sector , which was hit during the 2004 Tsunami .India is assisting in the rehabilitation of the Colombo-Matara rail link through a line of credit of 167.4 million USD. Indian High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha in August had ceremonially inaugurated the work on Sri Lanka's southern coastal railway line.The work on the railway line is being handled by the Indian Company IRCON.After the completion of the work on Phase 1 of the project in Galle-Matara Section (42 Kms), the work on Phase II in the Galle-Colombo section has also started and the full quantity of rails will be reaching at Colombo Port soon.India is also committed to infrastructure development in Northern Sri Lanka, after the end of the armed conflict. Government of India has already announced a line of credit of 800 million USD for the reconstruction of railway infrastructure in Northern Sri Lanka.
