Rail network to connect Afghanistan, Turkmenistan & Tajikistan

Afghanistan, Turkmenistan and Tajikistan has signed a agreement for connecting the three countries with railway network. A memoandum of understaqnding for this was signed at a trilateral summit held inAshgabat among the Presidents of the three countries yesterday. Apress release issued by the Afghan President's office in Kabul lastnight said the three countries will hold expert group meeting withinone month of the signing of the memorandum for detailed study ofroutes, as well as organizational, legal and financial requirementsfor the practical implementation of the proeject. The construction ofthe railway project is likely to begin in early July of the current year.The proposed railway line will connect Turkmenistan and Tajikistan via northern provinces of Faryab, Jawzjan, Balkh and Kunduz in Afghanistan. Following the signing ceremony the three Presidents addressed a joint press conference in which they described the project as very important for enhancing trade and economic development among the countries. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said that theproposed railway network will not only link the three countries, butwould also contribute to their peoples' well being, bringing them a brighter future.President Karzai is attending International Nowroz Festival in Ashgabat today.
