Rahul to address huge tribal meeting in Orissa

AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi is on a one-day visit to Orissa today to address a huge meeting of tribals at Jagannathpur in Lanjigarh of Kalahandi district. He is scheduled to address on the occasion of Tribal Rights Day being observed by youth Congress. Rahul Gandhi's visit assumes much significance following rejection of environmental clearance to Vedanta Resources company's bauxite mining project at Lanjigarh by Union Ministry of Environment and Forests only a couple days back. In his last visit in March 2008, Rahul Gandhi had promised the local primitive tribes, the Dangarias, Kutias and Jharias, living near Niyamgiri hills at Lanjigarh, to fight for them as the tribals heavily depend on the Niyamgiri hills for their bread and butter. The local tribals have been fighting for years against the mining by Vedanta Resources in Niyamgiri hills. Elaborate security arrangements have been made for the visit of Rahul Gandhi. The local tribals have decided to welcome him with traditional ghumra dance. A galaxy of Congress leaders of Orissa have gathered at the meeting place to welcome Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile, the ruling Biju Janta Dal has decided to organise a meeting on 3rd of next month at Lanjigarh to protest Centre's attitude towards Orissa. Today the youth wing of BJD is holding a protest rally in front of Raj Bhawan at Bhubaneswar.
