Rahul meets victims of sexual assault cases in UP

The Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today visited Banda and Kanpur districts of Uttar Pradesh and met victims of two sexual assault cases. In Kanpur Rahul Gandhi visited the hospital where a Dalit girl of Fatehpur who was seriously injured and disfigured as she resisted an attempt of gang rape by three men. The main accused in the case has been arrested.Earlier in the day, he met Banda rape victim girl and her family members at Shahbazpur village in Banda district . The family members of the victim expressed fears about security and requested him for adequate arrangements in this regard. Meanwhile the judicial custody of all the four accused including MLA Purshottam Naresh Diwedi was extended till 15th Febuary by Banda district court.The opposition parties in have severely crirticised the Mayawati Government for the worsening law and order situation in the state.The issue also rocked the Assembly. It witnessed noisy scenes when Opposition members alleged that UP government was responsible for poor law and order situation and the recent rape cases. The noisy scenes disrupted its proceedings several times following which the Chairman adjourned the House till tomorrow.Expressing deep concern at the rising incidents of crime against women in Uttar Pradesh, the Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Mrs. Krishna Tirath today directed the National Commission for Women to investigate the reported mutilation of a Dalit girl in Fatehpur in the state. She also asked the state government to take stern measures to protect the citizens from anti-social elements.Earlier in the day, Mrs. Tirath visited the Police Control Room at the Delhi Police Headquarter and reviewed the working of police personnel handling the calls and complaints.Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta briefed her about the latest technology adopted in the control room and recent measures taken by the police in view of the rising crime graph particularly against women and children in the National Capital Region.
