Rahul Gandhi appointed Congress Vice President

Rahul Gandhi has been appointed the Vice President of the Congress party. The major decision was taken by the Congress Working Committee in Jaipur today. Briefing news persons, the party's General Secretary, Janardhan Diwedi said that Rahul Gandhi's name was proposed by Senior Congress leader and Defence Minister A.K.Antony and the Working committee accepted it. Party President Sonia Gandhi approved the proposal.

Diwedi said, Rahul Gandhi has been elevated to second position in the party and who will lead the party's campaign in the next general elections will be decided later. He said Rahul Gandhi has accepted the appointment.

AIR Jaipur Correspondent reports that the jubilant party workers in the city burst fire crackers soon after the news spread .

Earlier, the two day Chintan Shivir of All India Congress committee ended its two day meeting dicussing various social, economic and party issues.

AIR correspondent adds that discussion among the delegates were mainly on safety of women, direct cash subsidy and youth leadership. Regarding women's safety, there were demands of the delegates for death penalty to rapists. There were also demands of sweeping police reforms, including fifty percent all-women police stations.

After the two day's discussion a draft based on deliberations of group discussion is reviewed in Congress Working Committee meeting. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Party General Secretary Rahul Gandhi were present during the group discussions.
