Rahul Gandhi accuses CPI(M) of siphoning off central funds meant for poor

Launching an attack on the ruling CPI(M) in West Bengal, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today accused the party of grabbing crores of rupees from central funds meant for the uplift of the poor and downtrodden. Addressing a Youth Congress rally at the Shahid Minar maidan in Kolkata, he said that the UPA government is sending crores of rupees to the state under different schemes, including NREGA, but the fund is being siphoned off and going to the CPI(M) coffers. He added that this has been going on for 33 years. In a hard-hitting speech, Rahul said, under the CPI(M) rule, there are two Bengals, one is for CPI(M) which is shining and the second is for the the poor. In his first ever public rally in the city, the AICC General Secretary said 45 per cent of the people in the state have no ration cards. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has refuted Rahul Gandhi's allegations on diversion of central funds. Reacting sharply, the State Finance Minister Dr. Asim Dasgupta said, the West Bengal government is spending the central fund for development purposes and abiding by all the norms. Dr. Dasgupta claimed that the Centre should perform its constitutional responsibility to release 1400 crore rupees which is yet to be received by the State under NREGA scheme.
