Rahul: Congress committed to enactment of Lokpal Bill

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi has said that the Congress is committed to the enactment of the Lokpal Bill. Addressing a Press Conference in New Delhi he sought support of all parties to the passage of Lokpal Bill in Parliament.

Mr. Gandhi said that this is matter of national interest and all parties should put aside other issues. He said there is a broad consensus on the bill and if the government will get support of the parties it can be passed in this session itself.

Denying that the Lokpal Bill is being pushed because of Aam Aadmi Party or Anna Hazare's fast, the Congress Vice President said that the Congress-led UPA has already brought RTI, which is the single biggest weapon to fight corruption.

Finance Minister Mr. Chidambaram, who was also present at the press conference, said few parties still have some reservations but no party is against the Lokpal. He also clarified that the government has made only two-three changes in the recommendations of the Rajya Sabha Select Committee.

Law and Justice MInister Kapil Sibal said the Bill does not deal with the appointment of CBI chief. However, CBI will function under the ambit of Lokpal.

Meanwhile, BJP has said it is ready to pass the Lokpal Bill without discussions. Briefing reporters in New Delhi this evening, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitely said that BJP wants smooth passage of the bill on Monday.

He said that government should not change the recommendations of the Select Committee on the Lokpal. He also allged that Congress and its allies are blocking the passage of bill.
