Radiation contamination worsens in Japan

The radiation contamination worsens in Japan with sea water recording radioactive iodine level much higher than the prescribed limit. Japanese government agency, Tokyo Electric Power Corporation, TEPCO, has said that highly concentrated radioactive substances have been detected in seawater close to the earthquake-cum-tsunami hit Fukushima nuclear power plant after the radiactive substances were passed into it through the nuclear plant's discharging outlets. TEPCO said that the radioactive iodine level detected in seawater samples was 131, which is 126.7 times higher than the legal concentration limit. The levels of caesium was registered to be 134, which is 24.8 times higher than the set standard. The International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, officials said that levels of radiation upto 1600 times higher than normal were detected in an area 20 kilometers away from the affected nuclear plant. In a related incident, geologists have warned that another earthquake could strike Japan as the previous one on 11th of this month. Japan is located on the volcanic fault lines spanning the Pacific Basin. Meanwhile, the death toll from Japan's earthquake and tsunami rose to more than 9,000. Japanese officials said today, the number of confirmed dead is 9,079, while 12,645 remain missing. Unconfirmed sources, however, put the death toll over 22,000.
