The representation of Scheduled Castes in high-level government jobs has increased nearly eight times in the last 45 years while the proportion of Scheduled Tribes has shown an almost 20-fold jump. Official sources said that Group A Scheduled Cast officers in government jobs were 1.64 per cent at the beginning of 1965 and it has increased to 12.5 per cent in January, 2008.
Similarly, Scheduled Tribes in the government jobs increased from a meager 0.27 per cent in 1965 to 4.9 per cent in 2008.
These figures have been brought out in a government brochure.
The reservation at lower level has had a similar impact. From 13.17 per cent on January 1, 1965, the share of Scheduled Castes has gone up to 17.51 per cent.
The percentage of Scheduled Tribes is up from 2.25 per cent to 6.82 per cent in the same period.
However, the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, P.L. Punia says, more steps need to be taken to increase the representation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Public Sector Units, both Central as well as State.
