Quality seed production crosses 350 lakh quintals

Production of quality seed in the country has crossed the level of 350 lakh quintals in the last fiscal. Out of the total production about 51 percent was produced by government agencies and 49 percent by the private seed companies.
According to an official release, seed production of crops like cereals, oilseeds and pulses are mostly being undertaken by government owned seed companies, while the private sector seed companies are predominantly producing seeds of vegetable crops, cotton, maize and hybrid paddy.

The release also said that the government has allocated over 290 crore rupees in the current financial year for the development and strengthening of infrastructure facilities for production of quality seeds in the country.

It has also taken several steps to encourage and promote the role of seed companies for production of quality seeds.
