Putin relaxes controversial ban on protests for Winter Olympics

Russian President Vladimir Putin has relaxed a controversial ban he had imposed on all public protests for the next month's Winter Olympics and Para-Olympics in Sochi. People will now be able to hold demonstrations in a designated area of the Black Sea resort but only if they obtain official permission. The International Olympic Committee has welcomed the change, saying it is in line with assurances given by Mr. Putin to ensure free election as well as security. Mr. Putin has also released a number of high profile prisoners in the run up to the game. A special security regime will be in place in and around the southern city from 7 January until 21 March.
