Punjab's RCF pips target; over 1700 coaches made last fiscal

Punjab's Kapurthala based Rail Coach Factory (RCF) has produced record number of coaches in the financial year ended on 31st March this year, as it reached the mark of 1701 coaches against installed capacity of 1500 coaches per annum. Senior RCF spokesperson Virendra Kumar Vij told a news agency that the RCF had targetted production of 1,600 coaches till year end, but it exceeded the expectations.Besides its own production, 150 unfurnished coaches were also turned out for RCF Rae Bareli, which is a new production unit of the Indian Railways where production activity has recently started, Vij added. The RCF spokesperson said that the factory in association with the Defence Research and Development Establishment, also developed a highly cost-effective indigenous technology for treatment of faecal waste in coaches. He said that they have started fitting these bio toilets in all new coaches. Total 2096 biotoilets have been fitted in 2013-14.This will help in providing an almost maintenance free and a low cost solution to the problem of open defecation on the railway tracks, Vij said.
