In an endeavour to help wives deserted by their Non-Resident Indian runaway grooms, Punjab government is in the process of enacting a new comprehensive law by August, this year. Besides keeping a check over such unfortunate marriages, the proposed law would make it mandatory for NRIs to provide complete verification, compulsory registration of such marriages and verification of details from Indian consulates setup in the country from where the NRI belongs to. This was announced by Deputy Chief Minister, Sukhbir Badal. He also launched a telephone helpline 0181-2221645 for women in distress. for Women.IG, Jalandhar Zone, Gurpreet Deo, who is also the in charge of NRI Affairs Wing of the Punjab Police has confirmed that since the launching of the helpline, more than 20 complaints had already been registered by some deserted wives and those women who are facing some other problem.About a dozen deserted wives by runaway grooms who were also present at the seminar narrated their tales of woes. Most of them were deserted by their husbands in less than a year of marriage. Couple of them were carrying their kids also who have seen their fathers in photographs only. Parents of such women were ruing that despite spending lakhs of rupees over the marriage of their beloved daughters, they have got nothing but sorrows.Asking the state police department to sensitize police personnel to deal with such cases, Bhatinda MP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal called upon the people of the state also to change their mind set towards such marriages in which credentials of grooms and their families are not known.
