Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has ordered a high level probe into the cataract operation following which 16 persons lost their eye sight in Gurdaspur district.
Chief Minister’s Media Advisor, Harcharan Bains said that Principal Secretary (Health) Vinnie Mahajan has been asked to conduct the inquiry into all aspects of the incident. An interim relief of Rs 1 lakh to each of the victims has already been announced by the state government.
It has also announced free medical treatment for those who have lost their eye sight. Punjab Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani told AIR that an FIR has been lodged against the eye surgeon who operated the patients, mostly aged women, belonging to Amritsar.
Some people lost their eyesight in Punjab after a cataract operation at a free eye camp organized by an NGO in Gurdaspur district.
