Punjab launches ‘Green Action Plan' to mark World Forestry Day

Punjab Governor and Administrator, Union territory, Chandigarh Shivraj Patil on Sunday launched a ‘Green Action Plan' for the year 2010-11 and planted a Buddha coconut tree to mark the celebrations of World Forestry Day at Nepli Forests, Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary at Chandigarh. Speaking on the occasion, he called for a crusade against degradation of environmental heritage and loss of forest cover and congratulated the forest department for raising forest and green cover of Chandigarh to 38 per cent.<br/><br/>He emphasised the involvement of every individual, village panchayats, municipal bodies, educational institutions and NGOs as active partners in this environmental-friendly programme. It was the sacred duty of every citizen to contribute towards making Chandigarh greener by planting saplings during the coming monsoon.<br/>
