Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Satish Kumar Asthana for using 31 police personnel as servants. The action against the IGP follows a public interest litigation (PIL), which came up for hearing in the Punjab and Haryana high court on October 11. The petitioner had alleged that Asthana had retained police personnel ever since he was deputed as Senior Superintendent of Police at Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Barnala and Patiala and also the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Patiala range.Meanwhile, Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini said in a press release that the unauthorised manpower was misused for personal work. The release added that appropriate departmental action would be taken against those units which had provided unauthorised manpower to Asthana.
