In Punjab, the seasonal harvest and religious festival Baisakhi is being celebrated with traditional fervor and enthusiasm today. This is the first day of Baisakh month of Indian calendar. This makes the end of cold weather and on set of summer season. It was on this day in 1699 the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh created Khalsa panth by choosing five persons from different regions of the country and from different castes and declared them pure. This way Guru Gobind Singh laid the foundation of national integration and casteless society in 17th century. In 1919 colonial rulers massacred the people in Jalianwala Bagh in Amritsar on this day while they were organising a peaceful rally to discuss the freedom of the country. To commemorate the creation of Khalsa panth state level function is being organised at Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district.
