‘Punjab Bandh’, for which the call was given by various Sikh organisations to protest against the delay in delivering justice to the victims of 1984 riots, more or less remained successful and peaceful.
AIR correspondent Rajesh Bali reports from Chandigarh that even banks also bore the brunt of the bandh as they have to down the shutters after protestors forced them to do so. Although the rail and road traffic remained disrupted till late afternoon at most of the places in the state, it slowly and gradually started moving. However, private vehicles were plying on the roads but their numbers were very less. In the evening, Bazars started opening up but most of the shops remained closed. Hospitals and Medical shops remained open through out.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal has thanked the people of the state for a peaceful statewide bandh and has also appreciated the role of state civil and police administration in aptly handling the law and order situation.
