Pune landslide: Over 300 people feared trapped,19 bodies recovered from debris; HM to visit area

In Maharashtra, at least 19 people were killed and more than 300 are feared trapped after a landslide triggered by heavy rain flattened Malin village in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district yesterday.

The landslide struck Malin village around 7.30 AM when most of the people were sleeping. A temple and a primary school were among those flattened by the landslide.

Disaster Response Force spokesman said, the landslide-affected 46 of the 70 houses in the tribal village. The death toll is likely to go up.

Officials said, 20 seriously injured people have been rescued from the debris. Frequent spells of rain hampered the rescue and relief operations being carried out by 400 NDRF personnel and other agencies.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the tragedy and asked Home Minister Rajnath Singh to rush to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Mr Singh is expected to visit the village today. Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan visited the site last evening and reviewed the rescue operations.
