Pulse polio day today

Around 174 million children below five years of age will get pulse polio drops during 2011 Pulse Polio Campaign beginning today. Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said in New delhi yesterday that the countrywide campaign will focus on the high risk states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Mr Azad said, the goal of Polio Free India is achievable as only 42 cases were reported in the country during 2010 as against 741 in 2009. President Pratibha DeviSingh Patil yesterday kicked off the campaign by administering polio drops to seven children at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Meanwhile, Japan has agreed to provide 10.6 crore rupees for the Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation Project to eradicate polio from India. In Andhra Pradesh, the first phase of pulse polio is being held today across the state. Over one crore children below 5 years of age will be given polio drops through 63,766 pulse polio designated centers and about 1900 mobile centers across the state. The Centers have also been set up at railway stations, Bus stands and at all tourist places to provide the polio drops to children who are on move. Migrants, nomads and groups like Workers in unorganized sectors are being specially focused this time. In addition, an extended drive of door to door campaign will be held tomorrow and the day after to cover the uncovered children and on 26th of this month, health workers will go door to door in seven cities to cover the still uncovered children. Health Minister D L Ravindra Reddy said no polio case was reported in the state during last two years and as a measure of abundant precaution, the government is launching another round of pulse polio immunization programme at a cost or Rs 9.35 crore.
