In Puducherry, the 12 hour bandh call given by some political parties and organizations evoked mixed response. The strike call was given to protest against the regional reservation for students of outlying areas of Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam in professional colleges. Normal life remained unaffected with private vehicles, government buses and autos plying as usual. Government offices, banks are functioning normally. Some of the private schools have declared a holiday. Police have made elaborate security arrangements to maintain law and order. Our correspondent reports that while political parties in Puducherry have demanded scrapping of regional reservation, the Karaikal struggle group has urged the territorial administration to continue the reservation to help student of backward outlying areas to get admission in professional courses.
