The Public Accounts Commitee has recommended that the rich and varied heriatage of bio-diversity of country, must be preserved, protected and digitalized with the assistance of premier scientific organisations of government of India. The committee in its report tabled in parliament said the services of Department of Science and Technology, atomic Energy and DARE may be utilized.
It has also asked to apprised the corrective measures taken to addressed the deficiences to meet the objectives of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. The Committee said India is considered to be the centre of origin of 30,000 to 50,000 varieties of rice, mangoes, turmeric, ginger and sugarcane. It is this geat biodiversity which makes it posible for millions of species including humans to co-exist.
It also noted that India is one of the 17 identified mega bio-diverse hot spots in the world. Out of 70 per cent of the total geographical area surved in the country so far, 45500 plant species and 91000 animals species representing about seven per of the worlds flora and 6.5 per cent of the world fauna, respectively, have been identified.
