PSLV-C14 launched

PSLV in its fifteenth successive mission on Wednesday injected the 960 kg Oceansat-2 into orbit 18 minutes after lift-off at an altitude of 728 km. Oceansat-2 is the sixteenth remote sensing satellite of India and will help in identifying fishing zones, predict the onset of monsoons and monitor coastal water pollution. The remote sensing satellite will also probe the important role played by the oceans in shaping the earth’s climate. The launch was an awesome sight as the core alone 44.4 metre-tall, 230 tonne, four stage vehicle roared into the skies, spitting orange flames and leaving trails of smoke with a rumble that shook the earth.A beaming ISRO Chief G. Madhavan Nair told newsmen that it was an excellent and precision launch, with the satellites being injected in the desired orbit. He said the signals from the satellite have started coming in. Speaking of more launches scheduled for this year, Mr Madhavan Nair said GSLV D 3 is tipped for a December flight which will use an indigenous cryogenic engine.
