<span style="color: #222222;">In Sri Lanka, the delimitation report on Provincial Council elections was defeated in Parliament with all 139 members present voting against it. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The report came up for discussion today followed by voting this evening. The main parties including United National party (UNP) led by Prime minister Ranil Wickresmsinghe, Joint opposition led by former President Mahinda Rajapakse and Tamil national alliance (TNA) voted against the report while some others abstained. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The report is meant for demarcation of constituencies for elections to provincial councils as per a new electoral system of mixed proportional representation, passed by Parliament last year with the two-thirds majority. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">However, several parties are opposed to the system after its experience at local body elections held in February where opposition led by Mahinda Rajapakse won the majority of seats. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The failure to pass the report has further put the pending elections in jeopardy. Elections to three of the nine councils are due since last year while term of three other councils are coming to an end this year. </span><br />'' <br />'' <span style="color: #222222;">The Election commission has said it cannot conduct the elections till a law is passed by Parliament. </span>
