In Afghanistan, protests against the burning of the Koran entered fourth day on Monday with a demonstration in eastern Laghman province. About 300 protesters brandished sticks and threw stones at police, who in turned fired shots in the air. However, no one was reported wounded today and protesters dispersed after warning shots. At least 21 people have been killed in the past three days of protests across the country. The protests began Friday when thousands of demonstrators in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif overran a U.N. compound, killing seven U.N. staff members. Meanwhile, US General David Petraeus has said the burning of the Koran at a small Florida church has created new dangers for the US-led mission against the Taliban. He deplored the burning as “hateful, extremely disrespectful and enormously intolerant. The commander said every security force leader's worst nightmare is being confronted by essentially a mob, especially one that can be influenced by individuals that want to incite violence and try to hijack passions.
