Protest against Ban Ki-moon's decision to appoint an expert panel

In Sri Lanka, a protest was organised at the UN office in the capital Colombo today against the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's decision to appoint an expert panel on alleged war crimes in the island's civil war. Eyewitnesses said around 1,000 protestors led by the Sri Lankan Minister Wimal Weerawansa led the protest. The protestors tried to enter the UN premises. Weerawansa has urged the protestors to surround the UN office and prevent the staff from leaving the premises until a decision is taken by Ban to dissolve the UN panel. Sri Lankan government, howeer, said that the comments made by Weerawansa was his individual opinion and did not reflect the policy of the government.
