Proposal to amend MCA under consideration

A proposal to amend the Medical Council Act is under consideration to limit the tenures of the president and vice-president of the Medical Council of India, MCI. <br/><br/>Official sources said that an ordinance is likely to be promulgated for the purpose which should also give powers to health ministry to make arrangements in the event of the office of president is vacant in the unforeseen situations.<br/><br/>The issue of alleged corruption in the Medical Council of India figured prominently in the discussions in the budget session of Parliament where the Health Minister Mr.Ghulam Nabi Azad strongly pleaded to arm the ministry with powers to ensure transparent functioning of the council<br/><br/><br/>.The President of The Medical Council of India, Ketan Desai has resigned from the post after his arrest by CBI for taking bribe.Our correspondent adds that MCI is an elected body with no provision for intervention by the government.<br/><br/>A provision for intervention was turned down by the Parliamentary Standing committe on health on the ground that it would jeopardise the independent working of the council and its decision making.
