Eminent agriculture scientist Professor MS Swaminathan has asserted that food security cannot be sustained without increasing productivity and making agriculture remunerative. In an exclusive interview to AIR correspondent Vijay Raina, he said, bridging the gap between demand and supply is essential to address the issue of achieving food security and the proposed Bill should take care of this important issue. He also called for creating a mechanism which ensures better income of small scale farmers and raises their standard of life.

Prof Swaminathan added a structured policy to procure other foodgrains and pulses under MSP needs to be introduced on the pattern of wheat and rice so that farmers get better price for their produce.

Referring to the controversy surrounding Bt. Brinjal, he said that its cultivation cannot be introduced in haste and called for setting up of an autonomous National Biotechnology Regulatory Authority for settling such policy issues. Prof Swaminathan expressed hope that moratorium on the introduction of Bt Brinjal will be used properly to look into the pros and cons before a final decision is taken on the issue.

He exuded confidence that 4 per cent growth in agriculture will be achieved with higher growth in dairy farming and horticulture. He stressed the need for making concerted efforts by states and the Centre to achieve better results . Over 5 per cent growth has been achieved during Indira Gandhi's second term. He noted that proper focus is needed on irrigation and use of modern technology has to be introduced among the farmers to usher in a green revolution in the country.
