Production begins in AP's first uranium mine

The production has begun in the first uranium mining and processing plant of Andhra Pradesh, at Thummalapalli in YSR District this morning.

Atomic energy department Secretary and Chairman Atomic Energy Commission SriKumar Benarjee formally inaugurated the plant. Speaking on the occasion, he said the second plant will be set up soon at Thummalapalli.

The new plant has a capacity of mining and processing three thousand tonnes uranium a day. With over 48 million tonnes of reserves.The Thummalapalli mine has been estimated one of the world’s largest uranium mines.

The new plant, built at a cost of over 11 hundred crore rupees on 900 hectares of land, will provide a major fillip to the country's much needed uranium fuel for nuclear programme.
