Proceedings in LS halted briefly on account of lack of quorum

The proceedings in the Lok Sabha was briefly halted on account of lack of quorum. After zero Hour, when the House was debating the Demands for Grants for the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for 2016-17, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge raised the issue of quorum. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan pressed the quorum bell to ensure the presence of members in the House for quorum. The presence of at least 10 per cent of the total strength of House or about 55 members makes the quorum. After making the quorum, the House resumed the discussion.

Earlier initiating the discussion, Santokh Singh Chaudhary demanded the government to review all the defunct schemes being implemented for SCs and STs. He alleged that the fund allocated for the welfare of these communities are not adequate and it should be raised according to proportion of their population.

He said, the government has to become more sensitive to check rising cases of atrocities against these communities. Participating in the debate, Hukumdev Narayan Yadav of BJP accused the previous government for not taking effective steps to eradicate the caste system in the country. In a veiled remark against the Congress, he alleged that the opposition has not been able to reconcile to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's growing popularity.
