Probe panel blames BJP MP, party workers for Saharanpur violence

In Uttar Pradesh, the five member high level probe committee, headed by senior minister Shivpal Yadav, has submitted its report on Saharanpur riots to the chief minister.

Sources said that the committee has held administrative apathy responsible for the riots which erupted in July last. Besides, the report has also accused BJP MP Raghav Lakhanpal and many of party workers for fanning the tension between communities. However, the BJP has rubbished the findings saying that the probe committee comprised only people from ruling dispensation and nobody from opposition was included in it. Therefore the findings are biased and unfair.

AIR correspondent reports, in addition to the inquiry by the ministerial group, another probe has also been ordered, which is being conducted by the Commissioner of Meerut Division. Home Secretary Kamal Saksena had told journalists that the one-man inquiry committee will go into the causes of the outbreak of the violence and also pinpoint the role of officers who displayed laxity in controlling the violent incidents.

The inquiry panel will also assess the loss of movable and immovable property and would suggest steps to stop such incidents in future, Mr. Saksena said.
BSP chief Mayawati has held both BJP and Samajwadi Party responsible for the Saharanpur riots in Uttar Pradesh. Reacting to a probe panel report on the riots, she said that her party does not agree with the probe panel's report on the riots. Talking to the reporters in New Delhi, she alleged that both BJP and Samajwadi Party were involved in the Saharanpur riots.

Meanwhile the BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi has dubbed the report as politically motivated.
