The Sikkim government has declined to give its consent to the CBI to initiate probe against Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and some of his Cabinet colleagues for amassing disproportionate assets. Instead, it has decided to appoint a state Commission of Inquiry to probe the allegations. The Commission will be headed by a retired Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court, Justice R K Patra. A decision to this effect, taken by the State Cabinet, was ratified by the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. AIR Gangtok correspondent reports that the decision is being seen as a clever political move by the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front to outsmart the Opposition SPCC which had filed a complaint before the CBI to this effect in July last year.
