At least 45 police personnel and five prison officials were hospitalized after prisoners at Sri Lanka’s main prison attacked them during a search operation early this morning. Speaking to AIR, Police spokesman Prashantha Jayakody said that the police was trying to carry out a search for hidden narcotics at the Welikada prison as part of a nation-wide anti-drug drive, after obtaining a search warrant.This is the jail where the former Army Chief and opposition consensus candidate in the January Presidential election, Sarath Fonseka is lodged. Fonseka is sentenced to 30 month prison sentence after a military tribunal held him guilty of corruption.
