Priority for railways at the moment is safety of passengers: Ashwani Lohani

Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani said that the number one priority for railways at the moment is safety of passengers . In an exclusive interview to All India Radio, the newly-appointed Chairman said unsafe conditions in railway tracks will not be permitted. <br/><br/>While accepting that the inadequacy of infrastructure is a cause of concern in the backdrop of the recent Elphinstone Road stampede in Mumbai, he said sufficient funds will be made available for all the safety related initiatives. <br/><br/>Mr.Lohani also termed the introduction of bullet train in Mumbai-Ahmedabad route as the coming of a new age for railways stating that increasing speed is also one of his priority areas. Currently, the average speed of passenger trains comes to the tune of 55 kilo meter per hour and that of goods trains is about 22 kmph. <br/><br/>The new chairman indicated that the railways wants to increase this average speed first on golden quadrilateral, taking up Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Kolkata initially.
