Price rise issue rocks both Houses of Parliament;LS adjourned for day

The issue of price rise today rocked both Houses of Parliament. While the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on the issue, the Rajya Sabha was also adjourned twice over the issue. There was uproar in both the Houses right from the start when the two houses met for the day. Agitated over the steep rise in the prices of essential commodities, the opposition members were up on their feet shouting slogans against the government for not being able to check the hike in the prices. Both the Houses were first adjourned till 11.30 and then till noon. Members belonging to TDP were also seen carrying placard for united Andhra Pradesh. When the Lok Sabha reassembled at 12, the entire opposition was again on its feet and continued their sloganeering unrelentlessly. In the midst of the pandemonium, the House completed its legislative business for the day with the passing of all the three bills, slated for today. The External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna had to lay on the table the statement on the Prime Minister's visit to Russia. The proceedings in the Rajya Sabha, however, resumed smoothly after 12.Earlier, members belonging to Left Parties, Samajwadi Party and RJD sat on a dharana outside Parliament on the price rise issue. Basudev Achariya of CPIM said that they will take the issue to the people after the session.

The Congress today said that non-action against hoarders by the state governments is the main reason behind the present price rise situation. Talking to reporters outside Parliament, party spokesperson Mr. Manish Tewari rebutted Oppositions’ charges that government is shying away from discussions on the topic. Blaming the Opposition for politicising the issue and disrupting the proceedings of the House, Mr. Tewari said that the appropriate steps are being taken by the centre and more needs to be done by the states.

The Oppositions parties on the other hand are blaming Central government stating that the price rise situation has arised due to faulty policies of the Centre. Talking to reporters, BJP leader Ravishankar Prasad said that government is not doing enough to capture price rise. Stating that the common people are suffering due to the situation, Mr. Prasad said that despite of the Prime Minister being an eminent economist himself, the government has failed to control the situation.

Speaking on the same lines, Samajwadi party leader Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav said that the party will take up the issue on various public platforms. Mr. Yadav attacked the government saying that it is for the first time that instead of making commitment for controlling the situation Prime Minister has said that the prices will rise further.

Earlier in the morning, SP, Left and RJD members staged a dharna outside Parliament protesting price rise.
