The price rise issue continued to dominate the proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament on the second day today. The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day while the Lok Sabha Speaker will give her ruling on the issue after lunch. She heard the pleas both from the Treasury as well as Opposition benches. While the Opposition strongly argued in favour of a discussion that provides for voting, the Leader of the House quoting from the rule book maintained that such a discussion can be taken up only when government fails to discharge its duties. The leader of the Lok Sabha Mr. Pranab Mukherjee explained the rationale behind the recent hike in the petroleum prices and cited the figures showing that the rate of inflation has come down. Though he admitted that the hike in petroleum products had some impact on the inflation Mr. Mukherjee asserted that the government is ready to take up the issue and discussed it thread bear. As the House met for the day after initial uproar by the Opposition, the Speaker allowed Leader of the Opposition Mrs. Sushma Swaraj to explain the necessity for taking up the discussion under such a motion. Mrs. Swaraj forcefully pleaded the case saying the notice is specific to take up the hike in the prices of kerosene and LPG by the recent government's decision. This, she said has affected the common man badly. Mr. Sharad Yadav of the JDU, Basudev Acharya of CPIM, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav of SP, Mr. Dara Singh Chouhan of the BSP, Mr. Lalu Prasad of RJD, Mr. Thambi Durai of AIADMK, and several others members of opposition while supporting the opposition sponsored adjournment motion highlighted the problems faced by the people due to rising prices. The members of the ruling alliance charged the Opposition of bringing an adjournment motion to destabilise the government. Mr. Sudeep Bandhopadhyay of Trinamool Congress supported a short duration discussion on the issue to be taken up immediately.Earlier, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till Noon today following noisy scenes with the opposition pressing for a discussion on price rise under a rule which provides for voting. As the House met after the adjournment the scene was no different and the Presiding Officer adjourned House for the day after the papers were laid on the table of the House amidst noisy scenes.Lok Sabha has also been adjourned for the day. As soon as the House met after the lunch, the opposition parties pleaded for taking up of adjournment motion on price rise. However, the plea was rejected by the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. The House was later adjourned for the day.
