The President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee has called for concerted efforts to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the country. Inaugurating a new school building named after his father and freedom fighter, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee, at Miriti in Birbhum district of West Bengal today, Mr Mukherjee said that basic education has improved a lot in the country because of the schemes like “Sarvashiksha Abhiyan”.
The President said that substantial amount is being spent for the spread of education in the 11th and 12th plan. But the government can not do everything alone and for this, personal and social initiatives are required. The President also stressed the need for proper maintenance of educational institutions besides opening of new ones. AIR correspondent reports that this is the first Secondary School inaugurated in the President's ancestral village, Miriti.
