The ruling UPA candidate and Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee today got support from two left partners. Opposition NDA and Left parties are divided on the issue of support in the Presidential election.Two alliance partners of NDA, JD(U) and Shiv Sena have pledged their support to the UPA candidate and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential election. In the Left front, CPIM has also decided to support Mr. Mukherjee but CPI and RSP announced that they will abstain from voting.
NDA convenor and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav said that his party will favour Mr. Pranab Mukherjee for the post of President. He added that the support for Mr. Mukherjee is as an individual and not as Congress leader.
Former Prime Minister and Janata Dal(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda today extended his party's support to Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee. He said three Members of Parliament and 30 MLAs from his party will vote for Mukherjee.
BJP today announced former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma's name for the post of President. An announcement to this effect was made by senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj.
CPIM leader Prakash Karat said that the party will support the candidature of Mr. Mukheree. He said, supporting Mr. Mukherjee did not mean backing the Congress.
RSP General Secreary T.J. Chandrachoodan said his party will abstain from voting.
Forward General Secretary Debabrata Biswas however noted that the party is not in favour of abstaining from voting.
UPA ally, Trinamul Congress is yet to take a decision on the Presidential election. AIADMK has announced support to the candidature of P.A. Sangma.
The UPA nominee and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee will file his papers on 28th of this month. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal confirmed this to All India Radio this evening.
Nomination has begun from the 16th of this month and will close on the 30th. Mr.Bansal also rejected the charges of NDA Leaders that UPA had not consulted them before selecting its candidate.
