Prez Patil voiced concern over criminalisation of politics

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Tuesday voiced serious concern over criminalisation of politics and influence of money power in elections. She favoured necessary legislative measures to make electoral processes more robust and free of any malpractices. Speaking on the National Voters' Day which coincides with the foundation of the Election Commission, the President said some of the persistent concerns are the criteria for candidates to fight elections, so that criminals and other such elements are debarred from contesting elections. On paid news, the President said, the Election Commission will continue to look at ways and means to make electoral processes much more robust and free of any malpractices. Mrs. Patil said good electoral practices and high conduct would attract the youth as well as talented and capable people to politics. The President presented awards for the best electoral practices under various categories. Mrs. Patil also handed over Voters Identity Cards to five newly enrolled voters. The voters were given a badge with a slogan 'Proud to be a voter – Ready to Vote,' during the felicitation ceremony. The function marked the culmination of year long diamond jubilee celebration of the Election Commission who have launched the National campaign to seek the participation and registration of new voters in the electoral process. Speaking on the occasion, Law Minister, Mr. Veerappa Moily said, his Ministry is in consultation with the Election Commission and will bring the election reforms bill within seven to eight months in the Parliament. Lok Sabha Speaker, Mrs. Meira Kumar urged for green election in the country. Saying that democracy triumphs over all other prejudices, Mrs. Kumar congratulated the Election Commission for its dedication and commitment in conducting polls.Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ms. Ambika Soni said, her Ministry in collaboration with the EC will popularise the campaign to vote.Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi said the Election Commission will set up an institute to train people in election management. He said the work on the Indian Institute of Democracy and Election Management has started and it should start functioning in three months. He said the EC has decided to consolidate the country's election management skills at the central institute and build up a resource centre accompanied by in depth documentation for learning by both national and international practitioners of elections and related fields. Mr. Quraishi said over 8 lakh polling stations around the country, eligible voters are being given their political empowerment by means of their voter identity cards.Our correspondent reports, the cabinet had last week given its nod for declaring the 25th January as the Voters Day. A Multi media campaign has been undertaken to popularise electoral participation. The observance of National Voters' Day is expected to give the youth a sense of citizenship, empowerment, pride and participation and also inspire them to exercise their franchise.
