President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil has launched a nation-wide mobilisation campaign, Saakshar Bharat Yatra, to promote adult literacy with a special focus on women and weaker sections of the society.
The campaign was flagged off by Mrs. Patil in New Delhi today.
Speaking at the Flagging Off function, Minister for Human Resource Development Mr Kapil Sibal said through this camaign, the Government was able to communicate with people about the education.
He stressed the need to empower the women to achieve the inclusive growth and participation in the development of the country. Sibal said the literacy was the only key for roboust economic growth.
AIR correspondent reports that the campaign will travel across different parts of the country and it will pass through some of the backward and left wing affected districts including, Gaya, Jamui, Rohtas in Bihar.
The yatra will also cover some of the difficult areas including Senapati in Manipur and Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir. In all it will cover 22 States ,180 districts ,1000 blocks over 16000 Gram Panchayats.
