The top UN official in Afghanistan has called on President Hamid Karzai to show his commitment to reform his next cabinet, echoing the growing pressure on the new President to tackle corruption and improve governance. Mr. Kai Eide, the UN Special Representative to Afghanistan has said that the world could desert Afghanistan if it does not give a positive signal through the composition of a new government. He said, some Afghans believe that Afghanistan is of such strategic importance that other countries will stay here whatever happens but it is simply not correct. Mr. Karzai, who was reelected for second term on Monday, has pledged to fight corruption. The Afghan President, however, mentioned the need for better utilization of donor’s aid, which constitutes majority of country’s GDP and most of it is outside Afghan government's purview. The US President Barack Obama in a congratulatory phone call to Mr. Karzai on Monday also stressed for tackling corruption.
